Self-fulfilling prophecies
Since our birth, we’ve been given all sorts of negative suggestions. We’ve been programmed with a lot of negative ideas. ‘You aren’t smart enough. You aren’t good-looking enough. You’re too fat, too skinny, too lazy, too hyperactive, too poor.’ We’re given beliefs from other people, and the problem is that we buy into them. These are the limitations that are imposed on you. They are beliefs that you must get rid of.
The words of Joe’s father played through his mind. He remembered his old teacher berating him for applying to business school as he would never make it. He saw his schoolmates tell him not to bother trying out with the school team as he would never make it. There were so many things he’d been told that he’d never be able to do. He was feeling more and more angry. What if those limitations weren’t true?
If a person believes that they are successful, it will cause them to act in a successful way, which will make it more likely that they will become successful. It’s what we call a self-fulfilling prophecy. To me, that’s such an important idea to teach our children and ourselves: learn to believe in yourself, and you will be at your best.
So what I get people to do is to believe that they’re someone wonderful, because when you start believing it you’ll start acting like it, and you’ll start getting wonderful results.
Joe scratched his head. Many of the limitations he imposed on himself came from his past. Now he was hearing that he could change it all.
He was convinced by the credibility of Richard’s words that it might actually work. Joe was even convinced that he could change some of his own beliefs. But he’d been programmed for most of his life to believe that he was just average and could never amount to anything great. How could all of that programming be unravelled in a couple of days? Perhaps he could find Alan and speak to him about this.
